For a nice ending to October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we had the idea at my day job to have a fundraising lunch and also to put up for bidding, three exclusive jewelry pieces made by me, shown above. All profits were to go to the cause, and we sold the first two pieces and amassed a $80 donation. The third piece will be available for sale on the website and as usual, half the sale price will go to the cause. Thanks to all the people at my company!

With this special event, we have now amassed a total of $300 until today. But donations can be made all year long, with the Hope Collection. Thanks to all of you from the bottom of our hearts!

En ligne, on trouve plein, plein de bijoux à prix ridicules. (Je parle de ceux faits à la main, pas ceux style Ardène). Ceci nous fait tous mal : les clientes pensent que c’est le prix normal, le vendeur ne fait souvent pas d’argent, et les autres artistes passent pour des arnaqueurs lorsqu’ils demandent un prix qui leur permettrait d’en vivre…

Ces trois articles (en anglais seulement) résument bien ma pensée et exposent notamment une liste de tout ce qui est utilisé quand on roule une compagnie de fabrication; des éléments fantômes au loyer en passant par les matériaux d’emballage, il faut tenir compte de beaucoup de choses dans son prix si on veut faire un minimum de profit – pas seulement des matériaux et du temps! Et ici, profit veut seulement dire : être capable d’acheter de nouveaux matériaux afin de produire de nouvelles pièces, après avoir payé toutes les dépenses reliées. C’est ce qui fait la différence entre “business” et “hobby”!

Laisses-moi savoir si vous avez appris quelque chose, si vous êtes surpris(e), choquée, ou autre… Ça m’intéresse!

If you ever thought of buying something handmade but found the price to be on the high side… this is for you.

Online, one can find an awful lot of ridiculously priced handmade jewelry. This is bad for many reasons : the customer thinks this is a fair price, the maker hardly makes any money, and the artist who prices her pieces so she can live from her business appears as a hustler…

These three articles are great reminders of what goes into a piece… and I agree with all of them. From ghost materials to rent to shipping supplies, a lot of things go into the price that has to be put on something handmade if one is going to make a profit, not only materials and time! And by profit, I mean being able to purchase new materials to make new things, after having paid every related expense. That’s the difference between “business” and “hobby”!

You may have found this place a bit quiet over the last few weeks… I’ve been working on a complete redesign of the website! It’s lighter, more cheerful… and more pink! You can already preview the (major!) changes, but I’m not finished tweaking the details. In the following weeks, I will launch it officially and will have a surprise for you all!

And as for new jewelry… well, I have a pile to photography, and another pile already photographed and waiting to be listed. It’s coming…

La plupart des rubis sont traités thermiquement afin de rehausser leur couleur, et c’est un procédé si largement répandu qu’il est considéré normal. On le synthétise aussi souvent – c’est à dire que le nouveau cristal a exactement la même structure que le natural, mais qu’il n’a pas été formé après des milliers d’années à l’intérieur de la croûte terrestre.

Historiquement, le rubis est associé à la royauté et le pouvoir de vie ou de mort.  De par sa couleur, il est associé à la passion et au romantisme, mais aussi au sang, symbole de courage et de bravoure. On lui attribuait d’ailleurs le pouvoir de pévenir la perte de sang et de renforcir le coeur.

Ruby is the birthstone of July, and also the 40th anniversary symbol. Part of the corundum family, it’s in fact a sapphire, but only the deep red or pink variety, which also sometimes exhibit a star or single line chatoyancy. When flawless, a ruby is more valuable than a diamond of equal weight!! Did you know that?

Most of rubies sold nowadays are heat treated to enhance their color. This process is very common and almost a given. It is also often bought as lab created – which means that the new crystal is identical in structure to the natural one, except for the fact that it was grown faster and outside of the earth’s crust.

Historically, rubies are associated with royalty and the power of life and death. By its colour, it is linked to passion and romande, but also to blood, symbol of courage and bravery. It was in fact attributed the power to prevent loss of blood and to strengthen the heart.

J’aime bien le collier mauve, il me fait penser à une demoiselle d’honneur avec une robe violette. Et j’aime bien le collier vert, à cause du nom de la bille lorsque je l’ai achetée (“un serpent dans mon jardin”)! J’aime aussi évidemment le résultat final, qui est plus harmonieux depuis que nous avons eu l’idée d’allonger la chaîne pour que le pendentif tombe plus bas, sur le sternum.

Here are two necklaces created recently, using artisan glass focal beads. I’ve had them for a while now, and wouldn’t know how to use them… until now!

I really like the purple necklace. It makes me think of a bridesmaid wearing a purple dress! And I like the green one too, mostly because of the name of the bead (“Snake in my garden”)! And the final result is very lovable too, since we found that lengthening the chain rendered the necklace more harmonious.

Here is an example of a custom made necklace. The customer had already bought her pendant, and wanted a necklace in earthy shades to complete it. She is very happy with the result, and so are we!
